MAPLE SYRUP INSTEAD OF SUGAR (go ahead and indulge)

SO GOOD AND SO GOOD FOR YOU TOO!

This is just something I thought you'd like. Plus some Recipes and a Sugar Busting Challenge Pack at the end of this blurb, rant, run on sentence of a thought.... whatever you'd like to call it.  Anywhooo...

Maple syrup is yummy!

Maple syrup is also a great sugar substitute especially if you're trying to use less refined sugar. To cut it out completely can be a bit tough so as we say in FIT U, how can we do just a little bit better.

I know, by replacing sugar with maple syrup in your cooking!

Especially this time of year.  It's maple syrup season here in Lancaster, Ontario and we are surrounded by Sugar Shacks so why not get in on this all natural liquid gold.

The sweetness is still very much present, if you're one to hanker for a sweet treat.

Maple syrup is around three times as sweet as regular sugar with fewer calories and has a low glycemic index, making it an ideal sweetener for those who suffer from diabetes. With antioxidants that support the body’s immune system and heart health, as well as several beneficial vitamins and minerals, maple syrup is a great sugar substitute in any recipe.

The basic ingredient in maple syrup is the sap from the maple tree and consists primarily of sucrose and water, with small amounts of other sugars. Maple syrup is similar to sugar with respect to calorie content, but is a good source of manganese, zinc and riboflavin.  Compared to honey, if that's your bag, maple syrup has 15 times more calcium and 1/10 as much sodium.

It’s no wonder we Canadians, take our Maple syrup seriously. Agriculture Canada has developed a "flavour wheel" that details 91 unique flavours that can be present in maple syrup.  These flavours are evaluated using a procedure similar to wine tasting.  Well, la de da!

Want more reasons to eat maple syrup?  OK!

Maple syrup is sweet in more ways than one. It is an excellent source of manganese and a good source of zinc making it sweet support for Your Immune System. Many types of immune cells appear to depend upon zinc for optimal function. In addition to the role played by zinc, the manganese in maple syrup is important since, as a component of the antioxidant SOD, it helps lessen inflammation, thus supporting healing. Manganese is an essential cofactor in a number of enzymes important in energy production and antioxidant defenses. Additionally, studies have found that in adults deficient in manganese, the other trace mineral amply supplied in maple syrup, the level of HDL (the "good" cholesterol) is decreased. One ounce of maple syrup supplies 22.0% of the daily value for this, CLEARLY, very important trace minerals.  In other words, it's better than sugar.

If you have a sweet tooth don't deny it!  That kinda punishment will only make you want and crave more and more until you throw those arms up in the air in defeat and dive headlong into a weekend binge.  It's a vicious cycle.  Instead, allow yourself indulgences here and there and try to do just a little bit better.  Not perfect but better.

IT'S ABOUT HEALTH!!!  That includes your sanity.

Want a pie?  Ok, sure.  How about swapping out that full sugar, store bought apple pie for an apple crumble that you made.  Full of nuts and fresh apples and some maple syrup?  Still yummy, still sweet but better.

That's not gonna work for you?  Then buy a pie and have a small piece, rather than the whole pie.  Perhaps you can add some nuts or fresh apples.  Still a win!  Enjoy your life.

No matter what the fitness magazines try to sell you, food is about pleasure.   Food is love, comfort, happiness, friendship, sadness, etc... will power is chopped away at by the minute in our hectic and stressful days. Gone are the days of simply trying to get nutrition in to survive.  Food is plentiful, if you're reading this, and heavily marketed.  Guaranteed by 7 pm that pie, is calling you like a sirens song and you will buckle.  So stop starving yourself or punishing yourself for doing what is natural - eating.

Be mindful.  Be kind.  Be realistic.  Before you eat something, stop and think, why?  Am I hungry, sad, bored or is this helping me cope?  If you're OK with that then go ahead and eat.  Slowly, mindfully and without guilt.  Then move on.

Focus on the wins!  1 piece instead of 2!  That's a win!

HERE'S HOW TO SWAP SUGAR OUT AND SYRUP INTO YOUR RECIPES.
YOUR JUST A LITTLE BIT BETTER.

Go ahead and use that maple syrup on more than just breakfast!

It can be used in the place of sugar for just about any recipe, at a ratio of ¾ cup of maple syrup for every one cup of sugar. When it comes to baking, that same amount is used but also be sure to reduce the amount of overall liquid in the recipe by about three tablespoons for each cup of maple syrup substituted. In order to replace honey with maple syrup in cooking, it is an even switch. It is a good idea to turn your oven temperature down about 25 degrees because the maple syrup caramelizes at a lower temperature than sugar does.
