CHEMICAL SHIT STORM (Eat real food - however that looks to you)

This goes for "healthy" bars, shakes and the like.
I know we aren’t  a “diet” page and that I have posted this meme before… but, I couldn’t resist sharing this with you again! A lot of CrossFitters follow the "Paleo" diet, though I prefer to think about it more as a template. A guide that is not to be taken to extreme measures. Think of this diet as Camelot; a silly place. A mystical , wonderful yet irrational place.

"We dine well here in Camelot,We eat ham and jam and spam a lot."

Rather, in this circumstance a silly thing with great intentions! Much like this blog.

You already know what to eat – REAL FOOD but that's just so darn vague isn't it? It's also quite presumptuous of me to think you actually know what the heck I'm talking about considering all the noise out there in regards to food and diets and nutrition.

SO, real food. Think meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, rice is good.  Sounds kinda "Paleo" band wagon doesn't it.  We'll kinda.  It's WHOLE foods and that comes in so many forms.

FYI: I've done the CrossFit cult Paleo Zone thing and it just wasn't for me.  Not to say it's not for you...just not me.  It made me crazy BUT I learned what real food was and it's a great guideline.

Guidelines are just that, a guide, not a straight and narrow path so give yourself a break if you yearn for a chocolate fix. If you're Paleo then throw that chocolate in a bush and forage for it. Voila!  Paleo. Have the fix and move on.

A super loose guide.
NOTE that some things are in moderation.
Find YOUR optimal diet (rather than simply speculating about what our Paleolithic ancestors ate), there’s no way to answer that question definitively. Why? Because just as there is tremendous variation among populations with diet, there is also tremendous individual variation. Some people clearly do better with no dairy products ie., me. So keep it simple by making sure you can read EVERY ingredient on the products you buy (which is REALLY easy if you only buy veggies, fruit, meats and good fats.)

You maybe thinking,  "HEY that's sounds kind of like Paleo and didn't you just say NOT to do Paleo?"

No, no I didn't just say not to do it. I said use it as a guide and find what works for you and your preferred eating style. Ugh..let me explain.

When you really cut the fat away and look at the diet,  it's telling us to eat more vegetables and fruits and cut down on processed foods... sounds an awful lot like Vegan and Vegetarian and a whole slew of other protocols.  The only real differences are these diets takes on macro nutients (carbs, fat, protein).  Vegans, no meat (often a higher carb diet).  Paleo, eat meat (often higher protein)  but they both want you to get your protein in some fashion and I have seen people do well on both diets.

So don't get caught up in the doctrine of the diet but rather focus on the general message and what they have in common.  Eat foods that are good for you and limit the garbage.

You need to fuel your body in order to get the absolute best results you can during your WODs. During life! So don't starve yourself skinny; not optimal.  We only get one body … fuel it with the best nutrient-rich foods you can and every now and again enjoy it.  It's just food!

BE YOU. BE STRONG. BE AWESOME!

Some words from someone WAY smarter than me.

P.S. Template vs Diet

What’s the difference? A Paleo diet implies a particular approach with clearly defined parameters that all people should follow. There’s little room for individual variation or experimentation.

A Paleo template implies a more flexible and individualized approach. A template contains a basic format or set of general guidelines (much like pirate rules...Pirates of the Carribean) that can then be customized based on the unique needs and experience of each person.

Why? because following a diet doesn't encourage the participant to think, experiment or consider his or her specific circumstances, while following a template does.  -
