5 Fears That Keep Folks (maybe even you) Out of the Gym
We believe functional training is your portal to good health and living a healthy and happy life, but Cherry Bomb Gym ...well any gym really, can seem like a scary place for a newcomer.
1. NOT FIT ENOUGH or “I’ll never be able to do that.”
This one is kinda bass akwards. The entire point of going to a gym is to get fit but I get it. It's scary.
If you have NEVER weight trained before (or trained only on machines), CrossFit style training is a great way for you to start (provided you have a great coach). You’ll learn how to do all of the important lifts in a super supportive and nonjudgmental environment. You might even find that…GASP…you love strength training! Which brings me to point number 2
2. GET TOO BULKY
One thing we get asked a lot by the women who are looking into starting Cherry Bomb is does CrossFit make me “bulky”? Anger, rage...disappointment!
3. WON'T FIT IN
Unlike a commercial gym, you actually get to know the people at Cherry Bomb. There’s always that feeling of team work and camaraderie. Workout partners can also challenge you and keep you accountable to your fitness goals, while you do the same for them.
You’ll find solidarity among our members who have gone through the same fears.
Fear you won't be FIT enough, won't belong, will get too bulky, don't have the time, or that everyone is watching you. If this is you, we're here to help. Our fitness coaches work every day with baby boomers, new moms, you name it!, who’ve never before belonged to a gym, or are just getting back after years away. So, from first-hand experience, let me suggest a few ways to conquer your fitness fears, with these tips and a workout you can do AT HOME:
1. NOT FIT ENOUGH or “I’ll never be able to do that.”

I know many folks who didn't want to come into our gym until they felt like they were fit enough. Ridiculous! But we get it – in a commercial gym you have no clue if you’re doing an exercise right or not. Not here. While it’s not 1:1 training, you have a coach with you during every workout to help out by scaling the workouts to suit every fitness level.
As for the Never being able to do that... Whatever that is — a new lift, muscle ups, or just showing up regularly — you will nail it eventually if you want to. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither is a healthy body but we can certainly help.

One thing we get asked a lot by the women who are looking into starting Cherry Bomb is does CrossFit make me “bulky”? Anger, rage...disappointment!
One of the most difficult things to fight as a coach is the thought that “Lifting weights is going to make me ‘bulk up’” from women.
Let's address some misconceptions about how the body works…
- *You cannot “tone” a certain portion of your body; therefore, you must reduce your overall body fat percentage to see results in the area you want.
- Lean – having little to no surplus fat – Thus, to look “lean”, you need to have low levels of body fat.
- Toned – seeing muscle definition on a human body – Thus, to look “toned”, you need to have low levels of body fat combined with having enough muscular development that you can see the shape of the muscle under the skin. This is usually accomplished at below 20% body fat on women, and below 10% on men.
- Muscle is the body's furnace for fat burning. Building muscle speeds metabolism, burns fat, and will get you that "Fit/lean" look you oh so desire.
- We women just don’t have enough testosterone to bulk up by accident from a few gym sessions a week.

At Cherry Bomb you’re not just a membership payment …you’re a person.
4. NO TIME
Whoa there sparky. You don’t have to turn up five times a week and spend 3 hours a day training, but you do need to figure out how many sessions you can fit into your week and make them non-negotiable.
People think that unless they work out for long time they won’t see results, so they feel like they shouldn’t bother working out at all.
The turning point for me was when I no longer allowed myself to utter the words: “I don’t have time.” Instead, I said, “It’s not a priority.”
3 times a week is only 3 hours out of my 168 hours a week and I know you can get a great workout in 20 minutes or less, so I refuse to accept ANYBODY telling me that they don’t have time to work out. We get mobility, strength and cardio in, in less than an hour with high-intensity interval training. No 3 hour long stints on the treadmill..
So, erase the phrase “I don’t have time” from your vocabulary and instead, say “it’s not a priority.” Then decide what you actually want your priorities to be. Is it health, Facebook, Netflix, Family time, Work? None of these answers are wrong.

They are watching you but not for the reason you think.
They are all watching out FOR you. The coaches are watching you to be certain you know what you're doing and to keep you safe. The other athletes are watching you to cheer you on and to help out. No one's there to judge. So calm down! Unless you’re that guy or gal hauling heavy weight above your head like it ain’t no thang, no one cares what you’re doing. They’re too focused on their form, their workout, and their lungs burning to worry about what you’re doing or not doing in your corner.
Yes, it's scary. Yes, it's intimidating but all new things can be.
SOLUTION: Try!
Familiarity quells fear so try before you buy. Barbell and Kettlebells and group classes, may look intimidating, but once you start using them you'll see that you are in full control of everything.
