What motivates you? Is it Me.. Eegads I hope not.

So what is it that motivates you to want to be fit?  Is it the lure of the beach in summer.  The envious gazes of coworkers?  Perhaps it's just the "IN' thing right now.  Is it someone else encouraging you along?  If so they are all terrible reasons to want to start a fitness routine.  Terrible.  And not a one will help you stick to a program. Not even me.

You ready for this?

 According to the director of the Behavioral Fitness Laboratory at the University of Georgia, nearly 50 % of those who begin an exercise program drop out within the first 6 months. WHY?!!

My answer, is they simply don't want it all that badly.  That seems harsh but I swear I'm not being harsh.  To put it bluntly, they don't want to work for whatever it is they are hoping for because it isn't really all that important to them in their heart of hearts.  Most of their goals are frankly, shallow. Think about it.



Abs...that's not a goal.  That's anatomy and we all have them.
Bikini body...buy a bikini and stuff yourself in it. Bikini + body = Bikini body.  Who gives two shits about what others think of you in your swim suit.

Both those goals have nothing to do with you becoming a better, stronger, functional human.

If you're not happy now, you sure as shit won't be happy 10 pounds lighter.  Hungrier maybe.

Hey, it's a simple fact that if us oversized chimps want something badly enough we'll do everything it takes to get it and I'm challenging you to find out what motivates you to get serious about YOUR fitness.  Find that intrinsic motivation.

Intrinsic, you know, that thing that drives you to achieve from within and isn’t motivated by external rewards, like compliments, fitting into a smaller size, or winning a race.  All those things can get you started but long-term motivation needs to come from something much deeper.  It depends on your personal values.

A family that trains together, stays together.
Hey, when it comes to health and wellness, internal motivation requires emphasizing your current health and happiness instead of dreaming about future health. For this whole thing to be sustained, exercise and healthy habits need to make sense now and need to fit into your life today, not “off in the distance ". Those vague warnings about future health are far less motivating than the tangible, post-workout feeling of “ I'm a gym god.  I need to do this again!” This kind of 'in the moment', internal drive might not come naturally to all of us, but the good news is it can be learned.

Stop "bribing" yourself and take the time to really figure out what will truly motivate you to get your ass moving.  What is it that makes the sweating, grunting and swearing worth it to you?  Find out what you want more than that pie. Your health is at stake: heck, your very life is at stake.  It's time to become the best version of you!

Focus on what's truly important.  More time with family and friends.  Being able to enjoy your days pain free.  Play with the kids or grand kids and really smoke them at it.  "HA!  Take that you young upstarts."  Do what makes you happy!  Do something fun!!!

TRY THIS WOD OUT

All last week at Cherry Bomb we played games.  Fitness Monopoly, Brutal Boggle and THE CARD GAME (AMCAP). This one is always a huge hit.  *AMCAP (as many cards as possible).  Give it a try at home with a friend or drop in any Tuesday or Thursday at Cherry Bomb for a FREE trial.

GET STRONG.  HAVE FUN!

Grab a deck of cards and allocate an exercise to every suit.  ex. Spades = burpee
Set a time limit, like 20 minutes and get through the deck as quickly as possible performing the number of reps on the card. ex. 2 of spades = 2 burpees or whatever exercise you choose.
We added a twist and that was when you collect 3 of a kind ex.= three 2's then you get to penalize the other team by choosing 10 reps of ANY exercise.

Make fitness fun and you may just stick to it ;)
