10 Reasons Why I Workout (It Has NOTHING To Do With Weightloss)
| It's Not All About the Abs |
Health is important! I'm not going to include that in my list because it's obvious. Or at least it SHOULD BE IMPORTANT.
Some people just don’t get it; I was one of them. I struggled to see the long term. I would join a fitness program with an end in mind, such as fat loss, bikini body or some such nonsense. I didn't value the truth of fitness being a LIFESTYLE, which means training for my future self and not the here and now of whatever bullshit objectified image of myself I had seared in my brain at the time. Then I'd quit when life gets challenging.
I was the person who'd go through the motions of every-day life without much of an effort, never trying and never hoping for something better than mediocrity. I'd rationalize, justify and excuse when people around me would achieve success, while I was the same. My view of the world was one of a life shaped by external forces which I believed to be beyond my control. NOT TRUE!
Truth? You are your own keeper. You shape and mould your life with every decision or lack of action you take.
I believe, NOW, that the best measure of who we are is not how we look but in what we do and I was doing nothing more than was comfortably necessary. I was not changing because I was not trying.
The truest measure of strength goes much deeper than our muscles. True strength comes from within and drives us to create something great, which never comes easy.
I'm going to give you a few reasons why I workout and not a one will have anything to do with how I look!
1. It Keeps Me Sane
Lifting something heavy or perhaps doing a Metcon really does wonders when I'm stressed. It clears my head and helps me focus more on the here and now.
7. Makes Me feel SO Badass
Admit it: Sometimes there’s nothing better than working hard and getting sweaty. It makes me feel alive!
8. It Makes Me Happy
Thanks to the flood of endorphins, working out can literally - not metaphorically- make us happy. Plus it certainly helps to be surrounded by like minded people who are also enjoying the effects of training. Though it can make coaching the class a bit difficult some days. Can't get them to stop blabbing.
9. It's All About Me
ME TIME. Selfishness isn't a bad thing sometimes. Ever heard the saying,"If mom's not happy no one is."? When you take care of yourself, you can handle the little things that life tosses at you. And as I wrote before, I find it cathartic. It helps me to get my head on straight.
10. Because I Can!
What excuse have I got? I'm not sick, disabled, starving or in a war torn country. I'm happily married. Have healthy children and a super busy career that I chose. No excuse at all when you consider how many folks out there have real problems not 1st world ones.
If there were no challenges in life, no human would ever be able to rise higher than another. If anyone tries to knock you down know that most folk only say these things because you are a reflection of the strength they wish they had within themselves.

2. The Holy Crap I DID THAT!?
The human body is an amazing! It will do anything you ask it and beyond if only you treat it right. I find myself chasing that feeling more and more, rather than some strange IDEAL BODY... what can your abs do? Yeah, not so thrilling.

3. I'm More Confident Now
There’s nothing like struggling under a weight and then lifting it. Or struggling to learn a new skill and finally accomplishing it. That shit will bolster your confidence. Why do you think we see so many first pull up videos. That feeling of accomplishment and can make you feel great about yourself. And that confidence will make you stronger in all aspects of life. "No, no, good sir. Let ME open that jar for you! BOOM!" Though I still need others to reach the high shelf...can't have it all.

4. Mental Fortitude
Speaking of strength, it's more than just physical. There have been times where I wanted to quit... Open WOD 16.5. I hated the combo of thrusters and burpees. I hated that I wasn't performing my best but I knew I was capable. I just hit a wall of self doubt. I knew I could do it so I pushed through. That's kind of grit and tenacity will make you wonder what else you can do when the going gets tough. The gym builds character and mental fortitude that can translate to success elsewhere, too.

"I am grateful for my and my families health every day because when it's gone, I guarantee everything else, all the noise of the world, becomes secondary."
5. The Kids
Sure, I can keep up to them a bit better now but it's not just about keeping up. My fitness habits influence my sons. One, they see that I care about my health - I eat well, I train regularly, I rest, I have fun but they also see me as a strong and capable woman who respects her body. Hopefully they will see that they need to not only respect their bodies but a woman's body and her capabilities as well.

6. Best Anti-Aging Drug I've Found
Want to feel younger than your years? Act it. I can't believe I'll be 40. I certainly don't feel it and it is one of the main reasons why I exercise. I train so that I can continue to feel youthful later and perhaps kick some young upstarts butt. That's right, this grandma (when I hit that ripe old age) will own you son!
