Last week I wrote.
The expert knows the power behind simplicity while the amateur looks for the fads and gimmicks.
Boy oh boy, did I get a response from that. Positive! Thank goodness.
It seems those of us serious about taking back our health and fitness have become tired of being told we're stupid and haven't the slightest idea how to eat or train. I have faith enough in every one of you that you have enough intellect to HONESTLY know what you have to do.
At the end of the day, the reason why there's so much confusion is because there's too much to be gained by most "influencers" (industry, magazines, gurus) by keeping us all confused and looking for guidance. And sadly, real nutrition and health science is difficult and slow, which doesn't sit well with a quick-fix addicted public. Words like magic, miracle, or wonder drug don't work well with broccoli, liver or water.
Bottom line, when it comes to fat loss things are no different than they ever have been.
Think about it. The Atkins diet has become the paleo diet. Ab shredder workouts have become "core" training, which is now becoming functional fitness. (GUILTY!!) Warm-ups have a fancy name now - prehabilitation...see fancy. Roll that all up into one thing and you get movement training. It’s all the same stuff! This is great. No need to "poo poo" someone else's eating or training because guess what? It's all the same thing when you actually break it all down to individual components. Only difference is that someone, somewhere was clever enough to repackage things and create flashy new titles for the same old same old. SMARTY PANTS!
Thankfully, most often, these things are done with all the right intentions. WE, myself included, get into this industry with our hearts set on helping the most people we can. Sometimes it takes marketing to get the word out.
So back to the influx of info. It may seem like we're pretty screwed. Where can you turn for legitimate advice? My suggestion, is to properly calibrate our bullshit detectors, and seek out multiple, trustworthy resources. Be ready for conflicting data but when you do, look for what is similar. Example: Paleo vs Vegan: both recommend ditching processed foods and eating nutritional dense REAL foods such as vegetables, fruits, nuts and proteins (meat for the non Vegan).
So thank you all for restoring my faith in the human mind and it's ability to think critically.
I understand if some of you may still be confused. Lord knows, there are days when I am, but I fall back on the big lessons here.
- Eat smart, cook your own food, and think critically when someone tries to sell you a diet or lifestyle.
- Do your own research. Become your own guinea pig.
- Be willing to change your mind as new evidence arises (don't fall for the "I've done this my whole life and I'm fine" excuse.)
- Remember that what works for you may not work for someone else. Nutrition and exercise is never a one-size-fits-all science.
- Keep it real. If it sounds too good to be true...
- Keep it fun and think long term. Fitness is a lifestyle.
- AND FINALLY, keep it simple and know that you are good enough!!! Don't let generic inspirational memes keep you WISHING and HOPING SOMEDAY... Start now. You ARE that person.
This stuff is what counts in fitness.
Sorry to say, none of it is a quick fix.
Everyone wants results fast. They want results now.
Question for you: how long did it take to get where you are now?
As long as you are looking at short term fixes with definitive end dates, having a few treats, and blaming everyone else for your current state, you will never be successful.
BE AWESOME! BE A BADASS!!!
Your life is yours to live. Be reasonable, responsible, and realistic.
Still unsure? Scared? We'll stop that. I want you all to FAKE it till you MAKE it. True change comes from the inside out.
