STOP WORKING OUT! (start training for a better future)

I'm a level 1 Crossfit trainer, CrossFit Mobility trainer, Can Fit Pro certified, soon to be Level 1 Agatsu trainer and more but understand this, I'm no athlete. When running has been programmed for me I've often quipped, "who's chasing me?". I'm not a runner, never have been. Time on the treadmill is an exercise in determination rather than actual fitness. Trails? Those I can handle for about a half hour then I'm out!
Same goes for straight up weightlifting. It offers me a bit more. Though by itself, it's fairly mind numbing. You pick things up. You put things down. Repeat for 6 sets. Move on to the next heavy object. It’s boring. What's the point? Where's the practicality? What ever happened to athleticism...fun?
I no longer work out! It sounds too much like a chore. Chores are something we HAVE to do. I don't want to have to exercise, I want to enjoy what I do and continue to do so because it's fun, motivating and useful. I've decided instead of working out I’m going to start training for a better future. Not a lofty goal by any means. I want to be healthy and be capable of doing great things. I’m not one for marathons or bodybuilding competitions - too much work for what? A trophy? Maybe a cash prize and an ego boost? (These are my opinions only so please take no offense.) Call me lazy but I'm not willing to put that much work into something I, others may, but I don't love to do. But I do have kids I need to keep up to and hopefully someday, I'll have grandchildren. I want to be ready and maybe be the coolest grandmother around who can do handstands. Handstands! Tell me that's not awesome.

Basically, I'm saying to change the mindset from working out for the sake of exercise to your version of "play". Stop beating yourself up with no long term goal in mind. If you enjoy the exercise you've chosen ie CrossFit, my version of play, then you're more likely to stick to it. Find what works for you.
Most people "workout" with a short-term goal in mind like weight loss or deadlift 1000 pounds or run a marathon once. I like looking at health differently - To regain your health for the rest of your life. The goal is not to sacrifice everything to get your fastest time in next month’s race or WOD. The goal is to be faster, stronger and better next year than you are today. Make it a habit and if you're miserable STOP! Find something else.
Also, stop acting like living a healthy life is a big deal. You can go to the gym every week or exercise everyday and that's your normal. Not a sacrifice. Not an obligation. Normal. Don't make it a big deal, make it part of what makes you happy, and commit to being consistent. Not perfect.
Sure, I've been guilty of throwing in the towel before. Maybe it's a form of self sabotage or an ill perceived "easier way out" than to actually try but I can tell you that I am done with all that. Changes CAN happen, but you must stick with a plan any plan, long enough to let it show you that it is working! Just don’t give up and enjoy the journey.

| Yup, this is fun for me. I love to try and push myself. |
I’ve already said it, I’m no athlete. But I do not let what I don’t know or what I can’t yet do stop me from trying. Start. Fail. Learn. Move forward. Get your mind right.
Your heart, soul, and ego need to be on board. By facing the discomfort of change I was able to focus on the empowering choices I was making. As I succeeded, my self-esteem became brighter and permeated throughout all areas of my life. I became more organized, more creative, felt sexier than I have ever felt before, and I was all around happier! In short, I felt unstoppable. Heck, I am unstoppable.
Remember this, people who are usually the envy of all, are people who love themselves enough to strive for an overall improvement in their health and vitality. Stop sneering at those people and become one of them. Be the envy, or at the very least, think like one. Love yourself enough to commit. Good is not enough. This is your life! Set a higher standard. Compete against yourself not others. You are not them and they not you. Change takes courage and time. Recognize every win. Talk about the progress. When you reach that goal, have a cookie, and then start on the next goal.
This year, stop working out. Start training for something that matters. YOU! And unless you plan on dying on that tropical beach in that swimsuit you've been struggling to fit into all month, I recommend you commit now. Set that foundation for a stable future with good habits.
